Week 1 for APEX Adventures 2012 (pics inside!)

What a first week!  Thanks to everybody who came and braved the wind and cold!  This week, campers got a little taste of good old Southern Appalachian rain!  We did our Monday hike up in the upper elevations of the blue ridge.  Unlike other places, it can be just as beautiful up there on a blue-bird day with no clouds in the sky as it can when it is totally socked in by fog and rain.  There is just something mysteriously awesome about the Black Balsam Ridge when you can't see around the corner and conifers that are only a few feet in front of you look like obscure silhouettes.  When the sun does break through the clouds on days like this, it causes the wide open views to contrast with the remaining clouds in a breathtaking way.  The abundance of bear poop was a constant reminder that we weren't totally alone out there and it gave us a chance to talk about the proper wilderness bear-etiquette with the kids.  Not to concentrate too much on bear-business, but one thing that we noted was the almost ubiquitous presence of trash and food wrappers in the bear poo.  Bears are beginning to become dependent upon the leavings of campers and hikers that come through the area.  That gave us a chance to talk about how to be responsible users of the wilderness.
Mountain biking on day two was awesome as usual.  It's my favourite day but it's also the most stressful day as the trip leader.  Disassembling and loading the bikes onto the trailer, unloading and reassembling the bikes,  re-disassembling and reloading the bikes, re-unloading and re-reassembling the bikes at the end of the day will wear you out.  Watching 10 kids at the bottom of an awesome downhill trail buzzing with excitement is priceless.  Over the winter, I tested out some new trails to add to our current repertoire of routes at the Dupont State Forest and I found a gem!  It includes a really flowy loop that ends up at a waterfall with an awesome sliding rock dumping into a beautiful pool of water at the bottom.  It was, and I quote from one of our campers, "better than the real Sliding Rock!"  It's hard to get to, which makes it nice because all the tourists don't know about it!  Riding in the rain was the real fun though!  It poured on us pretty much the whole time.  Nothing like charging mud puddles at full speed in the rain.
Wednedsay was our second hiking day up in Pisgah.  Again, rain for most of the day.  No problem- all part of the experience!  We actually were sitting ontop of a big mountain overlook as we watched the rain shield approach.  That was pretty incredible.  It was on this hike that one of our campers took the "ant eater challenge".  I found a great big black ant and challenged the boys to eat it.  Everybody pondered the glory that it would bring, but backed away when they thought about the idea of something crawling around and squirming in their mouth.  It didn't take Chuck long to think about it though- he reached down, pick it up, and popped it in his mouth like a piece of candy.  Mad props to you, Chuck!
Finally, rafting day on the Nantahala River.  As always, this was a crowd favourite.  We had lots of fun and everybody got to swim. Everybody loved jumping off the big rock, Jack successfully jumped out of his boat and into the other one and pushed everybody in, and they all ate tons of candy and drove the camp staff crazy on the 2.5 hour van trip back home.  Good times.  Thanks again to all the kids who came and to all the parents who let their kids come this week!

APEX 2012 Session 1 starts monday!

I can't believe it's already time for APEX again!  It seems like just last week I was hosing off all my gear from last years' sessions.  Today I rode the APEX mountain bike route and scoped out some new stuff I think I'm gonna add, including a really fun and flowy singletrack section that we've never included in the ride before and a sweet water fall that I saw for my first time today!  It's hard to believe that as well as I know the Dupont State Forest, there are still waterfalls that I have never seen there!  Anyway, it's gonna be a crazy summer and I can't wait to see what's in store.  If you haven't signed up yet, I still have several open spots so check out the dates on the blog or send an email to me at apexcamps@gmail.com to see if there are spots open on the week you want to go.

Later!

Matt Griffin.

APEX Session 2: "THIS AIN'T AMATEUR HOUR!!"

We wrapped up session two of APEX this past week and what a blast we had! Thanks to all of you who came along. My favourite quote came from Austin when he said, "Mr Griffin, this isn't like camp at all. I usually hate summer camps but this just feels like I'm hanging out with all my friends and doing cool stuff in the mountains!"

On monday we took the silver bullet van up into the black balsam knob area as APEX Staffer, Nick Gragtmans, continued his search for his elusive black bear. Unfortunately, we saw no black bears but the view from Sam Knob was GOING OFF! We saw a great big bird way up high that I believe we have identified as a young bald eagle. It has a distictly white head but was somewhat smaller and had a different wing pattern than a typical adult bald eagle. (Nick did some googling for us when he got home to come up with the facts. We doubled back around and did the flat laurel creek trail and a few of the crew got their first taste of cold mountain water after jumping (or falling) into Flat Laurel Creek itself. We then took a walk up my favourite mountain in North Carolina, Black Balsam Knob. Black balsam offers 360 degree views all across the blue ridge.

On tuesday, we loaded up the bikes and hit the trail. We were joined by two Brevard locals who Nick and I race downhill with, JT and Trey. We staged and impromtu wheelie/manual contest on the pumptrack at dupont that was pretty impressive. One of our campers, Michael Kane from Langston Charter Middle School in Greenville SC, used his motocross background to show everyone there how it was done! He was the most naturally talented mountain biker we've had come through the camp! He was throwing moto whips on the pumptrack with his mountain bike. Very impressive Michael! I'm still waiting for someone to successfully climb the "Milkshake Challenge" hillclimb to win their free milkshake but we had some close attempts! After an exciting ride through the Dupont State Forest, we took a dip in Hooker falls to cool down.

On Wednesday, we headed towards the John Rock where we visited the fish hatchery, toured the visitor's center, very nearly got kicked out of the visitor's center, before hitting the hiking trails. We climbed the John Rock trail, topped out, and spent some time enjoying the view and identifying the mountains we saw in the distance using our topographical map. The campers all agreed that John Rock was their favourite hike of APEX. We headed back down and then hiked over toward some really nice, remote water falls where we found a sliding rock, a cave, and a nice deep pool at the bottom of a really tall waterfall. We took a final stop at the famous "Looking Glass Falls". Some of the kids braved the water and proved themselves by standing under the powerful falls in order to experience it to the fullest. I stood on the rocks and shivered!

Whitewater day, a favourite to many, did not disappoint. The highlight was picnic table rock, a 10 foot rock jump into the icy water of the Nantahala River. Ellie Bradbury lost one of her river shoes in her frantic attempt to swim her way out of the cold waters. She put out an All-Points-Bulletin to every passing boater to keep and eye out for her lost shoe. I must say, I was extremely surprised when, later on down the river, a duo of paddlers approached us with the missing shoe! Needless to say, Ellie was elated to be reunited with her footwear.

Thanks again to all the participants for coming along and thanks to all the parents who let us hang out with your kids for the week! We had a lot of fun and I can't wait until next week.
